NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Three members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field have been honored by the Little East Conference.
Senior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS) has been named LEC Men's Track Athlete of the Week. Freshman Chris Perry (Attleboro, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/BCC) has been named LEC Men's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week, while freshman Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS) has been named Women's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. The trio was honored for their performance at the Open New England Championships last weekend.
Nygaard, who broke the school record at 1000 when he posted the fastest qualifying time of 2:29.65 Friday night, broke the UMass Dartmouth indoor mile record Saturday when he finished seventh in 4:15.24. Perry finished third in the triple jump at 48 feet, ½ inch. Masse finished 14th in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 1 ¾ inches.
"Eric Nygaard broke two school records at the Open New Englands, running 2:29.65 in the 1000 meters, and 4:15.24 in the mile, and finishing seventh in both events," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "Eric went into the meet with the goal of breaking both of those records and he accomplished both of those goals. Chris Perry finished third at the Open New Englands in the triple jump, which is an outstanding accomplishment, and being a freshman makes it even more extraordinary. Chris will be skipping the ECACs this week as he prepares for the NCAA Division III Championships next week in Ohio. Jessica Masse has had a very consistent indoor season, and as evidence, was seeded in the top flight of throwers at the Open New Englands. She may not have scored, but she had a great experience competing in the top flight among New England's best."
The Corsairs will return to action at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships this weekend.
