NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Three members of the UMass Dartmouth track and field team have earned Little East Conference honors.
Junior Linee Mello-Frost (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) has been named LEC Female Track Athlete of the Week. Sophomore Tom Barry (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington HS) has been named LEC Male Field Athlete of the Week, while freshman Matt Ford (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) was named LEC Male Rookie Track Athlete of the Week.
Mello-Frost broke the school record in the 100 meter hurdles at Saturday's UMass Dartmouth Invitational, finishing first in 15.37 seconds. She was also a member of the 4 x 100 meter relay team that finished second in 51.56 seconds.
Barry finished first in the javelin Saturday. His winning throw of 168 feet, five inches was the seventh best mark at UMD, and qualified him for the Division III New England Championships.
Ford finished first at 800 meters on Saturday with a time of 2:02.26. "Linee is in the midst of a great year, and it was nice to see her set the school record in our invitational," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "She now has both the indoor and the outdoor record, and we'll be looking for even better times as the year goes along. Tom Barry is an outstanding leader. He had five personal bests among his six throws in the meet. He works very hard, and he deserves all the accolades he receives. Matt Ford is having a very good freshman year. He had his best time of the year under very windy conditions. He is one of our hardest working and most reliable athletes, and his honor is well-deserved."
The Corsairs will compete at the Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College this weekend.
