NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Three members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field team have earned Little East Conference honors.
Freshmen Jessica Masse (Somerville, MA/Somerville HS), Ezra Banks (Boston, MA/Newton South HS) and Brandon Higgins (Wareham, MA/Upper Cape Cod Regional VO Tech HS) have been named Freshman Athletes of the Week for their performances at last weekend's season-opening Jay Carisella Invitational, hosted by Northeastern at the Reggie Lewis Track.
Masse, who was named Women's Rookie Field Athlete of the Week, finished fourth in the shot put, and her throw of 41 feet, 3 ¾ inches qualified her for both the Division III New England Championships and the Open New England Championships. Banks, who was named Women's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week, was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, 11 ½ inches, which broke the school record and qualified her for the Division III and Open New England Championships. Higgins tied the school record when he finished fourth in the high jump at six feet, six inches. He qualified for the Division III, Open New England and ECAC Championships.
"It's a nice way for each of them to begin their college careers," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "We've been working since pre-season, and it was nice to see each one of them do well in their first meet. Jessica had a personal record in her first meet, Brandon equaled his PR, and Ezra was very close to hers. It was a nice start, and we're looking forward to what the rest of the year holds for them."
The Corsairs will return to action at the Harvard Open this Saturday.
