Volleyball Downs Mount Ida In Four

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team defeated visiting Mount Ida in the 2012 season opener for both teams at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday. The Corsairs the Mustangs, 26-24, 25-18, 24-26 and 25-23.

Senior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) led the Corsairs with 28 assists, five kills, no hitting errors and only one ball handling error. Freshman outside hitter Stephanie Antoine (New Bedford, MA/Greater New Bedford Vo Tech HS) led UMD with 12 kills, while freshman outside hitter Brianna Perry (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) added nine. Junior Tahirah Gibson (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) led the Corsairs with three blocks, while Antoine and freshman outside hitter Eliza Bowes (West Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS).

"Jess carried our attack, and we had a solid passing game from (freshman) Alexis Ruest (Coventry, RI/Coventry HS), " said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "Alexis, Brianna Perry and (freshman outside hitter) Linsay Boulay (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had 90 per cent of our serve receptions and only had one reception error. They turned in a very solid performance. I wasn't sure what to expect, since Mount Ida took us to five last year, but I was pleased with our service game, in which we had 11 aces and only five errors. I am ecstatic that we got win number one out of the way."

The Corsairs improved to 1-0 with the victory, while the Mustangs dropped to 0-1 with the defeat.. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Salve Regina Wednesday evening. Mount Ida will host Framingham State Tuesday.
