WENHAM, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team host defeated both host Gordon and Bridgewater State in a non-conference tri-match at Gordon's Bennett Athletic Center Saturday.
The Corsairs defeated Bridgewater State 3-1, winning 25-22, 20-25, 25-20 and 25-23 and swept the Fighting Scots 25-15, 25-19 and 28-26.
In the opening match the Corsairs were led offensively by senior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) who had 34 assists. Freshman outside hitter Brianna Perry (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 11 kills, while freshman outside hitter Eliza Bowes (West Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) added eight kills. Defensively, freshman outside hitter Linsay Boulay (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had nine digs, while junior middle blocker Tahirah Gibson (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) added six blocks.
In the second match of the day the Corsairs rallied in the third set to score a 3-0 victory over Gordon. Offensively, Goncalves led the way once again for UMD with 25 assists. Perry and Bowes combined for 17 kills, while Boulay and freshman Carina Filosa (Milford, MA/Milford HS) each had seven digs.
"The way we rallied in the third set against Gordon was the most impressive comeback I've seen since I've been here," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We were down 24-15 and rallied back to win knowing any error would give them the set. Carina (Filosa) was a huge factor in the comeback and I couldn't be happier for us."
The Corsairs are now 17-3, while Gordon is 10-8 and BSU is 7-7.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host UMass Boston Tuesday evening.
