NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team fell to visiting UMass Boston in a Little East Conference match at the Tripp Athletic Center Tuesday evening.
The Beacons prevailed, 25-15, 25-21 and 25-21.
For the Corsairs, freshman forward Stephanie Antoine (New Bedford, MA/Greater New Bedford Vo Tech HS) had 10 kills in 19 attempts, while senior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) added 16 assists. For UMass Boston, senior middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark HS) had 14 kills and hit .522, while freshman setter Emma Rocha (Boynton Beach, FL/Pope John Paul II HS) had 24 assists.
"I thought the scores of the second and third sets were more indicative of how the match went," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We knew that UMass Boston would be quicker than the other teams we had seen, and it took us a while to adjust. Stephanie Antoine had an unbelievable game, hitting over .500 for the match against a quality team with size, and Jess was a great leader on the court. I was a little disappointed in our serve receive. We had 11 reception errors, and we needed to pass the ball a little bit better. Given the fact we have so many freshmen, I thought we held our own against one of the top teams in New England."
UMass Dartmouth fell to 17-4 and 1-3 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while UMass Boston improved to 12-5 and 4-0 in LEC play with the victory.
The Corsairs will return to action when they host Suffolk Friday night. The Beacons will host an invitational tournament this weekend.
