NEWPORT, RI-Host Salve Regina defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team in three sets in the Corsairs' season opener at the Rogers Recreation Center Wednesday evening. The Seahawks prevailed, 25-7, 25-10 and 25-9.
For UMass Dartmouth, junior Caitlin Bien (Millbury, MA/Millbury HS) led the way with four kills, nine assists and five digs, senior middle blocker Tahirah Gibson (Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) had four kills and one block, while sophomore Brianna Perry (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had three kills and eight digs. Jennifer Duggan and Clare Adams had eight kills apiece for the Seahawks, and Duggan also added six service aces. SRU outhit UMD, .349 to minus .089 and had 16 service aces.
"It was an extremely disappointing way to start the season," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We struggled during the pre-season with nagging injuries, and we had to juggle a few things around. It was still a disappointing match."
The Seahawks improved to 4-0 with the victory, while the Corsairs fell to 0-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host the UMD Invitational Saturday. Salve Regina will travel to St. Joseph's (LI) for a pair of matches.
