WALTHAM, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth took a set from Gordon College, dropping 3-1 before host Brandeis turned aside the Corsairs 3-0 at Saturday's tri-match hosted by the Judges at Red Auerbach Arena.

How it Happened

After dropping the first set 25-19, UMass Dartmouth rebounded for a 25-21 second set victory, but the Scots held the Corsairs at bay in the final two.
Junior Amanda LaCroix (East Freetown, Mass.) led all players with 15 kills, adding in 13 digs, with sophomore Nicole Silverman (Chelmsford, Mass.) adding 10 kills and Jillian Sykora (Waterford, Conn.) contributing 17 digs.
After a consistent back-and-forth in the first set, Gordon went on a 7-3 run to bump ahead 22-18 and closed it out when Amanda Snyder (San Jose, Calif.) served up a kill and then notched a service ace.
UMass Dartmouth rebounded with 12 kills in the second set, and led wire-to-wire after opening up a 3-0 lead on Meghan Mullinax's (Lake Balboa, Calif.) serve. The Scots resurged to tie the set at 17, but UMass Dartmouth shut the door by outscoring Gordon 8-4 in the remainder.
In the final two sets, UMass Dartmouth mustered just 15 combined kills while committing 13 errors, dropping the contests 25-19 and 25-14, respectively.

The Corsairs were outmatched by the host Judges in the nightcap, falling 25-14, 26-24 and 25-10 in straight sets.
Freshman Tashneal Africa (Chelsea, Mass.) led UMass Dartmouth with six kills, with Sykora anchoring the backline with a match-high 18 digs.
Brandeis started out the contest with 17 kills in the first set and just one attack error. The Judges went up six (14-8) and extend the advantage to seven points to force another UMass Dartmouth timeout. Out of the break, the Judges outscored the Corsairs 7-2 for the decision in the set.
The Corsairs wouldn't go easily in the second, as Africa recorded four of her kills on just seven attempts and the Judges committed eight attack errors. Again, Mullinax set the tone with five-straight points to start on her serve before Brandeis responded. The hosts eventually climbed back to tie the set at 24, and back-to-back kills by Zara Platt (Fountain Valley, Calif.) claimed the 26-24 win.
The third set was an easy finish for Brandeis, as the Corsairs mustered just five kills with 11 attack errors.
Inside the Numbers
- On the day, LaCroix finished with 18 kills on 79 attempts, and ranked second on the Corsair roster with 20 digs.
- Sykora totaled 35 digs (5.00 per set), and freshman Riley Thomas (Fairhaven, Mass.) keyed UMass Dartmouth with 45 total assists (6.43 assists per set).
- Africa tipped a team-high six blocks on the day (three solo, three assisted) while averaging 1.14 kills per set.
UMass Dartmouth stays on the road on Tuesday, returning to Little East Conference play at Eastern Connecticut at 7 p.m.
