Volleyball Blanked by Wheaton, Western New England

NORTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team squared off with a pair of non-conference foes on Saturday at host Wheaton (Mass.), falling by 3-0 scores to Western New England and the Lyons.

How it Happened

The Corsairs chipped away at the Golden Bears, edging closer with each set, but the early miscues took their toll for a three-set sweep.

Sophomore Nicole Silverman (Chelmsford, Mass.) led UMass Dartmouth with eight kills on 28 attempts, followed closely by Amanda LaCroix's (East Freetown, Mass.) seven kills to go along with a team-high 12 digs.

Western New England earned a match-high 12 kills from Sam Heffer (Bethpage, N.Y.) on 23 attempts, and registered a .227 team attack percentage on the contest.

Both teams saw slow starts in the opener, but with the Corsairs able to register just four kills, Western New England took the point by at 25-17 margin. In the second, UMass Dartmouth climbed back after going down as much as six points to tie the set at 17-all, but the Golden Bears closed out the 25-20 final with seven of the final 11 points.

UMass Dartmouth made a comeback with a team-best. 258 attack percentage in the third set, this time battling back late following a seven-point deficit. Three-consecutive Corsair points drew the margin even at 20-all before a WNEU timeout, and the sides traded points until the Golden Bears managed two in a row for the 26-24 decider.

The host Lyons used a well-balanced attack and 49 team digs to keep the Corsairs at bay in the nightcap for both teams, with seven players totaling three or more kills.

Silverman completed nine kills to lead the Corsairs, as LaCroix and sophomore Jillian Sykora (Waterford, Conn.) combined for 22 of their team's 34 digs.

Wheaton's Casey Dinga (Windham, N.H.) totaled six kill on her 10 attempts, with the Lyons fueled by 23 assists from Becca Houghton (Emmaus, Pa.).

The Corsairs took an early 5-1 lead in the opening set, before Houghton stepped in to serve. A kill by Claire Cansler (Newhall, Calif.) put Wheaton up 8-7, and the Lyons' lead would then hold throughout for a 25-19 point.

A 9-2 lead for Wheaton in the second held strong, as the hosts took the largest win at 25-16 to pull ahead 2-0, and generated 10 kills to the Corsairs' seven in the third set to collect another 25-19 score for the clean sweep.

Inside the Numbers

  • Freshman Tashneal Africa (Chelsea, Mass.) converted five kills on her six attempts and paced UMass Dartmouth at the net on Saturday with a pair of solo blocks against WNEU.
  • Silverman and LaCroix both managed double-doubles on the day, with Silverman totaling 17 kills (2.83 per set) with 11 digs and LaCroix 12 kills and a team-high 22 digs (3.67).
  • Riley Thomas (Fairhaven, Mass.) registered all but four of UMass Dartmouth's assists on the day with 42 total.
