DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Freshman Amelia Murphy (North Attleboro, Mass.) registered 17 kills to lead Rhode Island College to a 3-2 Little East Conference volleyball victory over UMass Dartmouth Tuesday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center.
After dropping the first set 25-15, the visiting Anchorwomen (8-5, 2-0 LEC) rallied to take a 2-1 lead with identical 25-14 triumphs in the second and third sets, but the host Corsairs (5-7, 0-3 LEC) forced a deciding frame with a 25-23 fourth set win. Murphy recorded five kills in that fifth set victory for Rhode Island College, which came by a 15-9 margin.
Senior Jillian Ward (Coventry, R.I.) added eight kills, 17 digs and three service aces in the triumph for the visitors, who received four kills each from junior Jessica Brielmaier (West Greenwich, R.I.), sophomore Eden Anthony (Cranston, R.I.) and freshman Ashley Normandin (Blackstone, Mass.). Junior Jacqueline Jutras (Foster, R.I.) added 30 set assists, nine digs and six service aces for the Anchorwomen, who received 14 digs and two service aces from senior Marisa Brynes (Cranston, R.I.) as well as 10 digs from sophomore Samantha Borges (Swansea, Mass.).
Junior Nicole Silverman (Chelmsford, Mass.) notched a double-double effort of 13 kills and 12 digs in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which received a double-double performance of 12 kills and 12 digs from senior Amanda LaCroix (East Freetown, Mass.). Senior Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, Mass.) chipped in with 10 kills and four digs for the Corsairs, who received eight kills, five digs and four service aces from junior Samantha Sedano (Valley Glen, Calif.) along with 15 digs and four service aces from junior Jillian Sykora (Waterford, Conn.). Junior Jordan Rittberger (Huntington, N.Y.) recorded 21 set assists and a pair of digs for the hosts, who received 17 set assists and seven digs from sophomore Riley Thomas (Fairhaven, Mass.).
UMass Dartmouth hosts Colby-Sawyer in a non-league outing on Thursday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center beginning at 7:00 pm, while Rhode Island College heads to Norton, Mass. on Thursday evening to square off with Wheaton in a non-league match that also begins at 7:00 pm.
