WILLIMANTIC, CT-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team dropped a four-game decision to host Eastern Connecticut State at Geissler Gymnasium Saturday. The Warriors won, 25-10, 19-25, 14-25 and 16-25.
After losing the first game, the Corsairs jumped to a 7-1 lead and then led, 18-11, in winning the second game. They stayed close in the third and fourth games, but in each game, ECSU pulled away at the end.
Senior setter Melanie Staiger (Bournedale, MA/Bourne HS) had 23 assists for the Corsairs, freshman outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had 11 kills and eight digs, senior middle blocker Hilary Teichert (Pocasset, MA/Bourne HS) had 10 kills and eight blocks, and sophomore outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/ Norwalk HS) had six blocks.
"We came back, and we did a good job passing," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We played well in terms of serve reception and we had solid blocking at the next. We dug up tons of balls, but they just outgunned us at the end. It was one of our best performances of the year."
The Corsairs fell to 12-13 and 1-5 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while ECSU improved to 19-11 and 4-2 with the win. UMass Dartmouth will return to Eastern Connecticut for a first round LEC playoff match Tuesday evening.
