WILLIMANTIC, CT-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team fell to host Eastern Connecticut State in three games in their first-round Little East Conference match at Geissler Gymnasium Tuesday evening. The Warriors won, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-12.
The Corsairs trailed in the first game, 11-3, but out scored ECSU, 11-3, to tie the score at 14-14. The Warriors pulled away at the end of the first and second games and led throughout the third game.
Senior setter Melanie Staiger (Bournedale, MA/Bourne HS) had 23 assists for the Corsairs, freshman outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and senior middle blocker Hilary Teichert (Pocasset, MA/Bourne HS) each had eight kills, while freshman outside hitter Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) had six. Freshman libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) had 11 digs, while Staiger had nine.
"The people at UMass Dartmouth should be proud of their team, we played with a lot of heart," said Corsair Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We had a no-quit attitude. The scores look like we were going in the opposite direction, but that wasn't an indication of how we played, it was more of an indication of how efficient they were. The way we played today, we are one big win away from getting our team to believe we can win these games. We only had one service error, and we did a good job of reducing our errors in the entire match."
The Corsairs fell to 12-14 with the defeat, while ECSU improved to 20-11 with the win. Eastern Connecticut will play UMass Boston in a semi-final match at Keene State Friday. The match was the final action of the season for UMass Dartmouth.
