NEWTON, MA-It took a full five games, but the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team became the second Corsair squad in as many days to defeat Mount Ida in their opener Saturday. The Corsairs came from behind to down the Mustangs, 11-25, 25-18, 25-14, 23-25 and 15-9 at the Mount Ida College Athletic Center Saturday. The football team won their opener Friday, also against Mount Ida.
Junior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 23 assists and five kills for UMD. Senior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had 14 kills for the Corsairs, while senior outside hitter Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) added 13. Sophomore libero Caitlin Vandenburgh (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had 10 digs and senior libero Amanda Micco (Waltham, MA/Waltham HS) had seven, while Ascher contributed four blocks, and sophomore middle blocker Tahirah Gibson(Norwood, MA/Norwood HS) added three.
"We came out sloppy with a lot of the jitters, and we made a ton of errors in the first game," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "Then, we started to put it back together. Jess did a great job of setting the ball and running the offense."
The Corsairs improved to 1-0 with the victory, while the Mustangs dropped to 1-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Salve Regina Tuesday evening.
