NEWTON, MA-Freshman setter Jessica Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had her second consecutive strong game and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team defeated host Mount Ida in four games in a non-conference match at the Mount Ida Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. The Corsairs won, 25-19, 23-25, 25-12 and 25-16.
Goncalves had six kills, hit .667, and added 34 assists, eight digs and a block assist. Sophomore outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) led UMD with 13 kills, while junior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakas (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) added six. Sophomore libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) had 23 digs, while senior middle blocker Amanda Langfield (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) and sophomore middle blocker Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) each had six blocks.
"We came out real strong and won the first game," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We fell down early in game two, but we came back and tied it at 23 before we lost. In the third game, we jumped out to a 10-0 lead and went on to win that game and that gave us the advantage. Jessica was outstanding once again. She passed well, was all over the place, and got a ton of balls into position so our hitters could make the plays. Defensively, we got an unbelievable performance from Shannon Brodie. We played well on both sides of the ball. It was nice to get the second road win out of the way."
The Corsairs improved to 2-0 with the victory, while the Mustangs fell to 0-2 with the defeat. UMD will visit Salve Regina Tuesday evening.
