NEWPORT, RI-Host Salve Regina jumped out ahead and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team, 25-20, 25-18 and 25-14, in a non-conference match at the Rodgers Recreation Center Tuesday evening.
Junior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) led the Corsairs with eight kills, while senior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had six kills and two blocks. Sophomore libero Caitlin Vandenburgh (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had five digs.
"They jumped out on top of us, we regrouped and came back to within two points in the first game, but they pulled away at the end," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "In the second and third games, we were with them until the mid-teens. I was a little disappointed in terms of our serve receive. We didn't pass as well as we did in Saturday's match, and our offense was too one-dimensional. We just weren't in sync offensively. We have some work to do before our tournament this weekend."
The Corsairs dropped to 1-1 with the defeat, while the Seahawks improved to 2-0 with the victory.. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host the UMD Invitational this weekend.
