NEWPORT, RI-For the third consecutive match, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team spoiled their host's home opener. The Corsairs defeated host Salve Regina in four games in their 2009 home opener at the Rodgers Recreation Center Tuesday evening, winning, 14-25, 25-21, 25-13 and 25-13.
Freshman setter Jessica Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) led the attack for the third straight match, contributing 24 assists as sophomore outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had 10 kills, junior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) added eight, and junior outside hitter Lauren Safioleas (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had six.
"We didn't have the energy in the first game, but we turned it around and kicked it in," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "Jess was outstanding as far as distributing the ball, and our defense was stellar today. We started slowly on offense, but we were able to get it going in the second game."
The Corsairs improved to 3-0 with the victory, while the Seahawks fell to 1-4 with the defeat. UMD will host Salem State and Simmons Friday.
