NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-For the fourth consecutive time, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s volleyball team has won a home opener.
This time, it was their own. The Corsairs, who spoiled their host’s home opener in each of their first three matches this season, defeated visiting Salem State in four games in the first round of the UMD Invitational at the Tripp Athletic Center Friday evening, winning, 25-8, 21-25, 25-16, 25-21. UMass Dartmouth then won their second match of the night, downing Simmons in three games, 25-13, 25-20 and 25-15.
In the opener, freshman setter Jessica Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) led UMass Dartmouth with 27 assists and five service aces. Her efforts led to nine different UMD players recording kills, led by sophomore outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS), who had nine, junior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS), who added eight, and sophomore middle blocker Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS), who contributed five.
In the nightcap, Goncalves had 25 assists and a pair of blocks, Mastrocola had 15 kills, Tsaparakis added six kills and four blocks, and Ascher had five blocks.
“We did a solid job in serve receive, making only two reception errors, and we also had 17 service aces, so we kept the pressure on them,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. “We kept them out of their offense, which allowed us to run a lot of options. Jessica distributed the ball well, and Cami’s kills came at critical times. It was nice to get our first home win. Against Simmons we didn’t make any reception errors. “Our serve receive was solid.”
UMass Dartmouth improved to 5-0 with the wins, while SSC dropped to 1-7 and Simmons is 1-6. The Corsairs will play Simmons, Regis and Framingham State before the tournament concludes on Saturday.
