PLYMOUTH, NH-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team earned a split on their trip to Plymouth State Saturday.
The Corsairs dropped the Little East Conference match to the host Panthers, 25-21, 25-16 and 25-10, then came back to defeat Colby-Sawyer, 25-14, 21-25, 25-22, 18-25 and 15-13.
Against Colby-Sawyer, junior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had 18 kills, senior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) had 10, and senior outside hitter Lauren Safioleas (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) added eight. Sophomore setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 41 assists. In the PSU match, Mastrocola had seven kills, Tsaparakis and junior Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) each had four, and Goncalves added 18 assists.
"Against Plymouth State, I was pleased with the way we hung with the in the first set, considering that they are the 15th ranked team in New England," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "I was disappointed with how we finished up. We turned it around in the second match and played very well to knock off Colby-Sawyer.
The Corsairs are now 12-1 and 1-1 in the Little East Conference, while the Panthers are 9-5 and 2-0 in LEC play and the Chargers are now 7-6. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Lasell Tuesday evening.
