PROVIDENCE, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team defeated host Johnson & Wales and lost to Plymouth State on the second and final day of action at the Johnson & Wales Invitational Tournament, at the Harborside Recreation Center Saturday.
The Corsairs downed JWU, 26-24, 25-20 and 25-22; then lost to PSU, 25-17, 25-20, 16-25 and 31-29.
In the opener, senior middle blocker Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) had 14 kills, senior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had 10, and junior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) 33 assists and 14 digs, In the nightcap, Ascher had 11 kills, Mastrocola and senior middle blocker Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen Tech HS) had seven apiece, Goncalves had 21 assists, and senior libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) had 13 digs.
"We opened up with a solid match against Johnson & Wales, and the second match of the day was a barn burner," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We came from seven down in the fourth set to tie the score at 20."
Goncalves represented the Corsairs on the All-Tournament Team. In four matches, she had 18 kills, no errors and 26 hitting attempts for a .692 hitting percentage, with 84 assists, 21 digs and four blocks. "Everyone played well, and Jess was phenomenal," said DeRossi.
The Corsairs are now 10-6 while PSU is 12-5 and JWU is 3-18.. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Rhode Island College Tuesday evening.
