PROVIDENCE, RI-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team lost in four sets to host Rhode Island College in their Little East Conference match at the Murray Center Tuesday evening.
RIC won, 25-22, 24-26, 25-23 and 25-21.
Junior setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 28 assists and two blocks for UMass Dartmouth. Senior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) had had 17 kills, while senior middle blocker Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) had 10 kills and three blocks. Senior libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) had 14 digs.
"It was a disappointing loss, because almost half of their points came as a result of our mistakes," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "Our ball control was not as good as we expected it to be, and neither was our passing. We had a few shining moments, getting down 24-14 in the third set and coming all the way back to 24-23 before they called time out and got a kill. Some of our mistakes came at inopportune times."
The Corsairs dropped to 10-8 and 1-2 in the Little East Conference, while RIC improved to 10-7 and 1-2 in LEC action with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they play Western New England and Babson on the road Saturday.
