NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team got off to a good start and swept visiting Rhode Island College, 25-11, 25-21 and 25-23, in a Little East Conference match at the Tripp Athletic Center Tuesday evening.
Sophomore setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 30 assists, while senior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) had 13 kills, and junior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) and senior outside hitter Lauren Safioleas (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) each had six. Mastrocola added three service aces, Safioleas had two and junior libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) added one ace and nine digs.
"We did exactly what we wanted to do," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We talked today about good basics and solid decisions, and we were solid in the first game. In the second and third games, they started to crank it up a bit, but we kept hustling and that was one of our strengths, This was a big game for us, as teams that have two losses are behind us, and we have the tie-breaker on two teams and were looking to get a few more league wins."
The Corsairs are now 16-3 and 2-1 in the Little East Conference, while Rhode Island College is now 9-12 and 0-3 in LEC play. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Coast Guard and also play Wentworth Saturday. The Anchorwomen will visit Johnson & Wales and also play Salve Regina and Roger Williams Sunday.
