WORCESTER, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches with host Clark and Anna Maria at the Kneller Athletic Center Saturday. UMass Dartmouth defeated the Amcats, 25-8, 25-17 and 25-29, but fell to the host Cougars, 25-12, 25-20 and 25-13.
In the opener, senior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) and junior outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/ Case HS) led the Corsairs with seven kills each, while freshman setter Bianca Cabral (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) had 12 assists. "We played very well against Anna Maria," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "We hit extremely well as a team, our freshman backup setter did a good job, and it was a good team effort. Everyone contributed, we played smart, and we played with a lot of energy."
The nightcap was a different story. "Instead of playing to win, we played not to lose, and when that happens, you usually lose,' said DeRossi. "We were tentative, and we made 11 errors in each game, with a lot of them being unforced. We just need to get back to practice and work on the things we didn't do."
The Corsairs are now 19-6, while Anna Maria is 6-17 and Clark is 7-10. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Wentworth Thursday evening.
