NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team defeated visiting Wentworth, 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-19), in a non-conference match at the Tripp Athletic Center Thursday evening. It was the Corsairs' second annual "Dig Pink" match, held to support research for breast cancer.
Senior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) led the Corsairs with nine kills, while junior outside hitter Suzanne Landry (Tiverton, RI/CCRI) contributed seven. Sophomore setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) added 23 assists. Junior liberos Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) and Amanda Micco (Waltham, MA/Waltham HS) tallied 16 and eight digs respectively.
"One of the things we wanted to do was play solid basics, we wanted to have better servers, better receivers and have a better hitting percentage," said Corsairs Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "Offensively, Jess [Goncalves] did a great job of distributing the ball and defensively Shannon [Brodie] and Amanda [Micco] played solid." "This was a team that took us to five games in New London, so we came out wanted to take care of this one quickly," continued DeRossi.
The Corsairs improved to 20-6 with the victory, while Wentworth dropped to 5-18 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Keene State and also play Salve Regina Saturday. Wentworth will play Curry and Mass Maritime Saturday.
