NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team took it to the limit before dropping a five-game decision to visiting Rivier in a non-conference match at the Tripp Athletic Center Thursday evening. The Raiders won, 24-26, 25-17, 25-21, 21-25 and 15-10.
The Corsairs rallied from a 20-16 deficit in the first game, scoring eight consecutive points before Rivier rallied to tie it. UMD scored the next two points to end it, then came back to win the fourth game after falling behind, 2-1.
"In the second and third games, we didn't have an answer for (freshman outside hitter) Kenna Finlayson (Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy). In the fourth game, we served extremely tough, and took them out of their serve receive. We played hard, and we made a few errors."
Sophomore outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) led the Corsairs with 15 kills, junior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) added 12 and sophomore middle hitter Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) contributed 10. Freshman setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 21 assists and six kills, while sophomore libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) added 15 digs.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 17-9 with the defeat, while Rivier improved to 18-12 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Eastern Connecticut State and Southern Maine Saturday in the final Little East Conference matches of the season. The Raiders will travel to Lasell Saturday to play the Lasers and Suffolk.
