Freshman Katie Sheehan
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth cross country team have received post-season honors from the Little East Conference.
Freshmen Katie Sheehan (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) and Ben Girard (Manchester, MA/Manchester Essex HS) have been named LEC Rookie Runners of the Year.
Sheehan and Girard were the top runners this fall for UMass Dartmouth, leading the Corsairs all season and finishing as UMass Dartmouth's top runners at the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships, with Sheehan finishing fifth overall and Girard 17th.
"Katie was a very pleasant surprise to herself and an extremely pleasant surprise to her coaches," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hird. "I'll take those kinds of surprises any time. She was unheralded coming out of high school, took a few meets to figure things out, and shocked everyone at Westfield State. She just has a drive to do her best, and thankfully, her best is very good."
"Ben made the transition from running 5000 meters in high school to running five miles in college seemingly without losing a step," said Hird. "What's impressive about Ben is that he was hurting the last part of the season, but still managed to finish as our number one runner in the conference meet. Like Katie, Ben is interested in one thing and that is running as fast as he can."
The Corsairs will continue to compete in track and field this weekend at the Harvard Open.
