Bristol, R.I – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's cross country team secured first place, while the women garnered third out of a nine-team field at Colt State Park for the Roger Williams Invitational this past weekend.
The men captured first place with a team score of 33 points, highlighted by four top 10 finishers. UMass Dartmouth out-performed Wentworth (61) and Johnson and Wales (101) for the top spot.
Junior Kevin Wood (North Attleboro, Mass.) was the top finisher for the Corsairs, crossing the finishing line with a second place time of 17:02.88. Teammate Benjamin Braz (Peabody, Mass.) finished directly behind Wood in third (17:11.70), junior Ryan Hayes (Kingston, Mass.) took 7th and sophomore Sean Hierlihy rounded out the top 10 in 9th place. Junior Mike Vaz (Dartmouth, Mass.) tripped the timer at 17:44.37 in 12th and Dominic Roy (Alford, Mass.) registered a 22nd place finish in his first collegiate meet.
The women tallied 68 points, with Bridgewater State (60) and Endicott College (48) placing just ahead of the Corsairs in the standings.
Senior Katie Sheehan (Scituate, Mass.) and classmate Jessica Connor (Worcester, Mass.) led the charge for UMass Dartmouth, grabbing second and third place. Sheehan finished the 5K course with a time of 20:42.66 and edged out Connors by a couple seconds down the stretch. Senior Brittani Atkinson (Peabody, Mass.) took 15th with a time of 22:03.29, while sophomore Mary Leach (Peabody, Mass.) and Remi DiGiovanni (Southborough, Mass.) captured 23rd and 25th, respectively.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, Sep. 20 for the annual UMass Dartmouth Invitational. The starting gun will go off at 10:30 a.m. for the men and 11:30 a.m. for the women.
