WESTFIELD, Mass. – UMass Dartmouth Cross Country placed four within in the top 50 finishers at the 21st Annual James Earley Invitational, hosted by Westfield State and held at Stanley Park on Saturday afternoon.
Men's Cross Country Team: 11th of 41 teams (315 points)
Women's Cross Country Team: 15th of 41 teams (463 points)
How it Happened
Seniors Michael Vaz (Dartmouth, Mass.) paved the way for the men's team, notching his third top-10 finish of the season to place seventh in the field of 432 runners. Vaz turned in a time of 25:46 as the first LEC runner to cross the line.
Sophomore Jason Karakaedoes (Peabody, Mass.) made his 2016 debut after sitting out the first few races of the year and crossed the line in 47th, tripping the timer at 26:56. Senior Sean Herlihy (Walpole, Mass.) wrapped up the men's top-50 finishes by placing 49th in 26:58. On the women's side, junior Reme DiGiovanni (Southborough, Mass.) led the way with a time of 23:26, which placed her 31st in the race
Out of the 432 runners in the men's race, all of the Corsairs runners were within three minutes of the winner of the race, Gordon's Damon Kilgore (Londonderry, N.H.) with a time of 25:10.
In the women's race where 459 runners competed, the Corsairs were within 11 minutes of the race's leader. Host Westfield State's own Jess Cardin (Sutton, Mass.) took the individual title with a time of 21:26.81.
