DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The men's and women's cross country team hosted the 2016 Little East Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday and performed strongly, walking away with four all-conference recipients between the two races.
Men's Team: 3rd out of 6 teams (57 points)
Women's Team: 5th out of 7 teams (121 points)
How it Happened
Senior Michael Vaz (Dartmouth, Mass.) led the way for the Corsairs squad once again with a second-place overall finish in the men's race, wrapping up a season-best time of 25:20 for the highest LEC finish on his career. Sophomore Jason Karakaedos (Peabody, Mass.) followed Vaz's path and picked up eighth place on the day, crossing the line in 25:58, and senior Sean Herlihy (Walpole, Mass) rounded out the men's top-10 finishes in ninth at a personal-best 26:21.
Junior Reme DiGiovanni (Southborough, Mass.) led the way for the women's squad, securing fourth place overall in 18:49, the fastest 5K time of her career. The second Corsair finisher was again freshman Victoria Spitaels (West Newton, Mass.), who ran a season-best 19:50 to cross the line 17th overall.
Out of the 59 runners in the men's race, the top five Corsairs runners who received points were within two minutes of the individual winner of the race, Plymouth State's Sam Brunnette (Newport, Vt.) with a time of 25:12.31. The men's team title went to Southern Maine, which accumulated 45 points.
In the women's race where 85 runners competed, the point getters for the Corsairs were within four minutes of the race's leader. Keene State's Lindsay Szuch (Stratford, Conn.) won the women's division, completing the course in 18:02.74. The Owls were also the team champion, finishing with 35 points.
