WESTFIELD, Mass. – A pair of top 10 finishes by freshman Bruno Pires (New Bedford, Mass.) and junior Jason Karakaedos (Peabody, Mass.) highlighted the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth cross country teams' return to the course on Saturday at Westfield State's James Earley Invitational.
Men: 8th (269) of 37 teams
Women: 16th (422) of 33 teams
How it Happened
Paced by the outstanding races from Pires and Karakaedos, the Corsair men wrapped up an eighth-place team finish, placing as one of the top 10 teams in the field of nearly 40 squads. Pires placed fifth individually out of 266 runners, timing in at 26:22 with Karakaedos close behind in eighth at 26:35.
The UMass Dartmouth women also finished in the top half of the field in their race, earning 16th of 33 teams. For the fourth-straight race, sophomore Jessica O'Reilly (Millis, Mass.) was the Corsairs' top finisher, this time placing 58th in 20:15. Following moments later were freshman Taylor Walsh (Groveland, Mass.) in the 70th slot, timing in at 20:33, and sophomore Victoria Spitaels (West Newton, Mass.) in 72nd at 20:34.
Senior Tyree Gorham (Brockton, Mass.) registered his best time of the season as the third Corsair to cross the line. He took 59th individual, tripping the timer at 28:27. Also finishing in the top 100 was sophomore Travis Dolcine (Somerville, Mass.) in 28:58 (88th place).
Rounding out the top 100 Corsair finishers in the women's field of 257 was junior Kirsten Harden (Fitchburg, Mass.), taking 97th overall in a season-best 20:51.
The Corsairs will see one final race before the Little East Conference Championships, heading back to Western Massachusetts next Saturday for the Western New England Invitational.
