NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's cross country teams have been honored by the Little East Conference.
Freshman Jeremy Francisco (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) has been named LEC Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Year, while sophomore Caitlin McGarigal (Shutesbury, MA/Amherst Regional HS) was named Little East Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Year.
Francisco was the Corsairs' third runner at the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships last semester, finishing 19th overall in the five mile race in 27:44. During the season, he was consistently among the top finishers for the men's team. McGarigal led UMD at the LEC/Alliance Championships, finishing the five kilometer race in fourth place with a time of 19:31. She was the Corsairs' top runner all season long in her first season of collegiate cross country competition.
"Both Jeremy and Caitlin performed at a very high level throughout the season, pretty much from the start to the finish," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hird. "Jeremy really came on in the middle of the season, and helped us significantly. When our number one runner from last season (freshman Courtney Testa of Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) was hurt early in the season, Caitlin stepped right in and was our number one runner throughout the year, which was extraordinary considering that she'd never run cross country or track before in her life. They're both well-deserving."
