NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's cross country team have earned Little East Conference honors.
Junior Nick Santoro (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's HS) of the men's team was named LEC Men's Runner of the Week, while freshman Dekontee Chea (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) of the women's team was named LEC Women's Rookie Runner of the Week.
At Saturday's Roger Williams Invitational, Santoro finished second in the men's race in 16:15, while Chen (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) finished fifth in the women's race in 19:36. The UMD men won the race for the third year in a row, while the women were second in a field of seven teams.
"Any time one of our runners gets an award, I feel that they deserve it, but in this case, they really deserve it," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hird. "Nick was the defending champion and he came close to winning it again. He trained really hard in the summer. He and senior Derek Stevens (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) worked together really well at the front of the pack for the while race. Dekontee opened my eyes. She is a talented freshman, and she will get better over the course of the year. During the course of the year, everyone will get to see what kind of a talent she is."
The Corsairs will return to action when they host the annual UMass Dartmouth Invitational this Saturday.
