GALES FERRY, Conn. -- The UMass Dartmouth equestrian team placed sixth among 12 teams competing at the University of Rhode Island IHSA Horse Show Saturday afternoon at the Mystic Valley Hunt Club.
Senior Olivia Van der Meer (Medway, Mass.) took top honors in her open flat class and added a fourth place finish in the open fences for the Corsairs, as she finished the year as the Cacchione Cup champion that is awarded to the high point open champion in the region. Van der Meer will now compete at the IHSA Zone championships on April 6th.
Junior Lyndsey Getchell (Dartmouth, Mass.) was third in the novice flat and fifth in the novice fences for UMass Dartmouth, which received a third place performance in the walk trot from senior Jessica Epstein (Worcester, Mass.). Sophomore Mikayla George (Dracut, Mass.) and senior Shelby Cunningham (Mattapoisett, Mass.) recorded respective third and fourth place finishes in the novice flat for the Corsairs, who received a fourth place performance from sophomore Kayleigh Sauyet (Andover, Conn.) in the intermediate fences and a fifth place finish from sophomore Elizabeth Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) in the advanced walk trot canter. Junior Michaela Kessel (Haverhill, Mass.) and sophomore Kamori Porter-Jacques (Bellingham, Mass.) rounded out the competition with respective sixth place finishes in the open fences and beginners walk trot canter.
UMass Dartmouth heads to Bristol, R.I. next Saturday morning to compete at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Region One Championships.
