Sailing Finishes 8th At Providence Invitational

CRANSTON, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth sailing team produced several strong performances en route to an eighth place finish at the Providence College Invitational this past weekend.

In the A Division, captain junior Kelsey Martins (New Bedford, Mass.) and senior Janelle Hall (Attleboro, Mass.) finished inside the top-half of the 11-boat fleet in three races.  The Corsair tandem posted their best result of the regatta in Race No. 5, when the duo completed the course in fourth.  Two races earlier, UMass Dartmouth was the fifth fastest boat across the line.   

The Corsairs recorded a total of 75 points in the B Division, the seventh lowest combined score in the draw.  UMass Dartmouth produced its best finish in Race No. 3, when the Corsairs placed fifth overall.  UMass Dartmouth also crossed the finish line in sixth place in the seventh race of the regatta.

US Coast Guard Academy captured the team title with 45 combined points.  Connecticut College was six points off the pace, while Salve Regina University placed third in the team standings with 65 combined points.  The Corsairs were seven points behind the host Friars, while 24 markers ahead of Fairfield University.

UMass Dartmouth will complete its fall portion of the schedule, when the Corsairs return to Cranston, R.I. for the Providence College Invitational between Saturday, Nov. 1 and Sunday, Nov. 2.
