Baseball Blanks Brandeis, 7-0

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Freshman left-hander Aaron Chouinard (Swansea, MA/Case HS) pitched a seven-hit shutout as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team blanked Brandeis, 7-0, in a non-conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Monday.

Chouinard walked none and struck out five in earning the victory, improving his record to 1-1 and pitching the Corsairs' first complete game of the season.

UMass Dartmouth broke on top when they scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The first two runs crossed on an RBI double by junior right fielder Wayne Bolz (Billerica, Ma/Billerica HS). Sophomore third baseman George Aggostini (Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/Marist HS) and sophomore left fielder Luke Bomback (Swansea, MA/Case HS) singled home runs in the seventh, and senior first baseman Tyler White (Westport, MA/Westport HS/Massasoit CC) capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. Aggostini finished with three hits, and Bomback and sophomore center fielder Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS/Eckerd) each had two.

Senior left-hander Mike Swerdloff (Scarsdale, NY/Ardsley HS) started for Brandeis and pitched the first 6 2/3 innings, yielding three earned runs and taking the loss to fall to 2-3.

"It's nice to see us play a clean game, and it all starts with our starting pitching," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "Aaron threw a great game, we didn't give up any extra base runners due to walks or errors, and we had timely two out hitting. Brandeis is a good team, their starting pitcher pitched well, but we stuck with our game plan and it paid off. I can't say enough about Aaron and the pace of the game. He got ahead of the hitters all day long, and mixed up his pitches well. Overall, we played well in all three facets of the game."

Bolz' double was a key hit. "Wayne had a huge game," said Prince. "He hasn't played as much as he wanted to, but every time we call on him, he does what we need him to do. Even his outs have been hit hard."

The Corsairs improved to 7-10 with the victory, while the Judges dropped to 7-14 with the defeat.  UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Gordon Tuesday. Brandeis will host Worcester State Tuesday.
