UMass Dartmouth senior All-American Matt Cronin and freshman righthander Mike Sollitto were named as the respective Little East Conference Baseball Pitcher and Rookie of the Week on Monday afternoon for their efforts in last Saturday’s league twinbill split with Plymouth State at the UMD Baseball Field.
Cronin, a native of Framingham, Mass. and a graduate of Framingham High School, took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before settling for a one-hit shutout over nine innings with seven strikeouts in a 2-1 12-inning setback to the Panthers. The reigning New England Pitcher of the Year, Matt has recorded 40 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched while posting a 2.75 earned run average in six appearances for the Corsairs.
Sollitto, a native of North Providence, R.I. and a graduate of North Providence High School, earned his first collegiate victory after allowing an unearned run in 1 1/3 relief innings in the 12-10 nightcap victory over Plymouth State. Mike has made seven appearances to date in his inaugural collegiate campaign with four strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings of work.
Head Coach Bob Prince’s squad, which stands at 8-11 overall and 2-3 in Little East play, returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when UMass Dartmouth welcomes sixth-ranked Southern Maine to the UMD Baseball Field for a conference clash that begins at 3:30 pm EDT.
