Men's Basketball Flies Past Becker, Claims Fourth Straight With 88-46 Triumph

DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Senior Atakan Akcam (Ankara, Turkey) scored 17 points, grabbed six rebounds and recorded four steals to lead five players in double figures to lead UMass Dartmouth to an 88-46 non-league college men’s basketball victory over Becker Thursday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center.

The host Corsairs (8-4), who extended their winning streak to four straight, raced out to a 16-2 advantage in the opening six minutes of action and extended that margin to 29 points (46-17) at the break, and UMass Dartmouth blistered the nets at a 58 percent clip (18-31) in the final 20 minutes of play to lead by as many as 43 points in the closing minutes.

Freshman Adam Seablom (Lakeville, Mass.) added a career-high 15 points, five rebounds and four assists on the night for the Corsairs, who received 14 points (including four three-pointers), five boards and three assists from sophomore Jake Ashworth (Fairhaven, Mass.).  Senior Arinze Obiora (Hyde Park, Mass.) collected 11 points and six caroms for the winners, who received 10 points and five helpers from freshman Marcus Azor (Brockton, Mass.) to round out the quintet of double figure scorers.  Sophomore Patrick Gavin (Beverly, Mass.) chipped in with eight points for UMass Dartmouth, which also received seven points and three rebounds from freshman Sean Leahy (Hanson, Mass.).  Junior Marquis Jones (Randolph, Mass.) netted four points, four caroms, three assists and three steals for the Corsairs, who shot 56 percent (37-66) from the floor overall and canned 10 three-pointers.  The hosts scored 53 points in the paint and netted 27 of the 29 combined fast break points in the contest.

Senior Dewayne Thomas (Lowell, Mass.) led all scorers with a game-high 28 points on a 13-of-17 shooting effort in the setback for the visiting Hawks (2-8), who received five points and three rebounds from senior Kareem Davis (Lowell, Mass.).  Becker used a 62 percent shooting performance (13-21) from the floor in the second half to post a 41 percent (21-51) overall effort on the night, as UMass Dartmouth held a 38-22 rebounding advantage and scored 31 points off of 21 Hawk turnovers.

UMass Dartmouth hosts UMass Boston in a Little East Conference clash on Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center that tips-off at 3:00 pm, while Becker heads to Quincy, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Eastern Nazarene in a New England Collegiate Conference contest that tips-off at 1:00 pm.
