DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior Arinze Obiora (Hyde Park, Mass.) notched a double-double effort of 21 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four steals to lead UMass Dartmouth to an 81-65 victory over Castleton in the Little East Conference men’s basketball regular season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center.
Obiora and freshman Adam Seablom (Lakeville, Mass.) combined for 22 first half points that helped give the host Corsairs (18-7, 14-4 LEC) a 40-34 advantage at the break, but the visiting Spartans (3-22, 0-16 LEC) crept back to within a bucket (60-58) on junior Igor Almeida’s (Praia, Cape Verde) lay-in with 10:32 remaining in the contest. Sophomore Jake Ashworth (Fairhaven, Mass.) sparked a decisive 15-0 run with a three-pointer on the ensuing UMass Dartmouth possession, as the hosts capped that run on a jumper by junior Marquis Jones (Randolph, Mass.) with 6:10 to play before building its advantage to as much as 18 points in the closing minutes.
Seablom finished with 14 points in the win for the Corsairs, who received 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals from senior Atakan Akcam (Ankara, Turkey). Freshman Sean Leahy (Hanson, Mass.) chipped in with nine points and four boards for UMass Dartmouth, which received eight points, six assists and four caroms from fellow freshman Marcus Azor (Brockton, Mass.) and a combined 13 points from Ashworth and sophomore Dhalyn Sanders-Dyer (Worcester, Mass.). The hosts shot 47 percent (36-77) from the field overall and held a 40-37 rebounding advantage on the day, as the Corsairs converted 23 turnovers into 20 points while holding a 46-18 scoring edge in the paint.
Belade netted 15 points (including a trio of three-pointers) in the setback for Castleton, which received 14 points, six rebounds and four assists from sophomore Denis LeCours (Hardwick, Vt.) along with a double-double effort of 12 points, 10 boards and three assists from Almeida. Senior Ben Mrowka (Adelaide, Australia) and sophomore Richard Walker (Swanton, Vt.) each added nine points and five caroms for the Spartans, who shot 41 percent (24-59) from the floor and canned 11 triples for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth is seeded third in the upcoming Little East Conference Championships, as the Corsairs will entertain sixth-seeded Plymouth State in a league quarterfinal round matchup on Tuesday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center that tips-off at 7:00 pm. Today’s game marked the season finale for Castleton.
