Football Enjoys Happy Homecoming In 46-8 Victory Over Worcester State

DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Junior quarterback Stephen Gacioch (Tiverton, R.I.) amassed 331 yards of total offense and accounted for four touchdowns to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 46-8 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference football victory over Worcester State Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.

Gacioch rushed for a pair of touchdowns from 11 and five yards out in the opening 5:26 of action for the host Corsairs (5-2, 3-2 MASCAC), and he connected with senior Abbi Bamgbose (Worcester, Mass.) on a one-yard scoring strike that gave the receiver the school career touchdown receptions mark with 30 midway through the first frame.  Gacioch visited the end zone for a third time from three yards out on the first play of the second stanza to help stake UMass Dartmouth to a 26-6 advantage at the break, as the visiting Lancers (0-7, 0-5 MASCAC) received a pair of field goals from 24 and 33 yards out from freshman Kyle Wall (Sterling, Mass.) in the first quarter to account for their first half points.

The Corsairs struck for a pair of touchdowns in a 24-second span early after intermission, as junior Jacob Francis (Middletown, R.I.) plunged in from two yards out before sophomore Javien Delgado (Lynn, Mass.) returned a pick-six 36 yards on the ensuing possession.  Freshman Winston DeLeon (Hyde Park, Mass.) capped the hosts’ scoring with his first career touchdown from eight yards out that came with 3:58 to play in the contest, as Worcester State blocked the extra point attempt that resulted in a 98-yard defensive extra point conversion rush from junior Michael Elsey (Killingly, Conn.) to account for the final margin.

Gacioch completed 18-of-31 pass attempts for 292 yards in the triumph for UMass Dartmouth, as Bamgbose hauled in seven catches for 50 yards and also set the school career receiving yards mark of 2,486 yards in the process.  Junior Leroy Brown (Milton, Mass.) hauled in five receptions for 119 yards for the Corsairs, who received 86 rushing yards on 12 carries from freshman Luis Gonzalez (Greenacres, Fla.) as part of 519 yards of total offense.

Sophomore Aaron-Moses Williams (Springfield, Mass.) threw for 228 yards in the setback for Worcester State, which received five catches each and a combined 199 receiving yards from freshman Cam Kergo (Mashpee, Mass.) and senior Jordan Choquette (Warren, Mass.), as the Lancers recorded 292 yards of total offense on the afternoon.

Senior Connor Russ (Middletown, R.I.) and junior Chris Gomes (Taunton, Mass.) each registered six tackles on the day for UMass Dartmouth, which recorded five sacks and held on to its national lead in team tackles for loss with 12 for 47 yards for the contest.  Sophomore Adam Washington (Lynn, Mass.) and freshmen Walter Lazare (Newton Highlands, Mass.) and Steven Bohaboy (Dudley, Mass.) joined Delgado with interceptions for the Corsairs, who held the visitors to just 62 rushing yards.

Elsey added eight total tackles (seven solo) to go with his defensive extra point in the setback for Worcester State, which received seven stops each from junior Gus Ramstrom (Natick, Mass.) and sophomore AJ Byard (Deerfield Beach, Fla.).  Freshman Mason Broyles (Millbury, Mass.) recorded an interception for the Lancers, who received two sacks from freshman Josh Obisui (Worcester, Mass.).
