The UMass Dartmouth men’s golf team continues to earn accolades off the course, as a pair of Corsair student-athletes were named to the 2018-19 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference squad that was released Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Tom Sheran (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable) and junior Nick Avilla (Westport, Mass./Bishop Connolly) received the honor that was bestowed upon 1,030 student-athletes from GNAC permanent and affiliate member institutions. In order to be eligible for the league’s academic all-conference team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average and reached second-year academic status.
It’s been a memorable final collegiate campaign for Sheran, who earned the second GNAC individual title of his career last October after taking top medalist honors at Blackstone Valley National Golf Club in Sutton, Mass. Tom, who received his degree in Operations Management from the University last month, was the conference’s top medalist and Player of the Year during his freshman season at Rhode Island College in 2015, and he helped lead the Corsairs to a runner-up team finish in the event for the third time in 12 years.
Avilla, a Marketing & Management major at UMass Dartmouth, finished in 31st place at the GNAC Championships and was the top performer for Head Coach Joel Baptista’s squad at the 2018 New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships at The Captains Course in Brewster, Mass. last fall. Nick finished in a tie for 38th place in a field of 88 competitors, and he also helped the Corsairs notch a runner-up team finish at the Southern Maine Fall Classic.
