MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The UMass Dartmouth golf team opened its 2019-20 season by placing 23rd overall at the Middlebury Duke Nelson Invitational played on the par 71 layout of the Ralph Myhre Golf Course over the weekend.
Senior Nick Avilla (Westport, Mass.) and freshman Charlie Karagosian (Davis, Calif.) were the top two performers for the Corsairs, as Avilla fired rounds of 87-79 and Karagosian posted scores of 85-81 to finish with a two day total of 166 that tied for 102nd place. Sophomore Jack McDonald (New Bedford, Mass.) was next with a total of 168 (87-81) good for 109th place for the Corsairs, while the tandem of Alexander le Gassick (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and sophomore Paul DeSantis (Pembroke, Mass.) rounded out the scoring with respective totals of 171 (81-90) and 173 (90-83) that were good for 113th and 116th place.
New York University took top honors in the event with a score of 579, as the Violets bested runner-up Williams by 10 strokes and third place Middlebury by 11 shots.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action next weekend when the Corsairs travel to Williamstown, Mass. to compete in the two-day Williams Invitational at the Taconic Golf Club on Saturday afternoon.
