Ice Hockey Drops 7-2 Decision To Wentworth In SNHU PAL Stovepipe Cup

HOOKSETT, N.H. --  Senior Connor Busch (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) netted a pair of goals as Wentworth overcame a 2-1 first period deficit to notch a 7-2 victory over UMass Dartmouth in opening round play of the Southern New Hampshire PAL Stovepipe Cup Saturday afternoon at The Ice Den.

Senior Nate Chase (Plainfield, Ill.) staked the Leopards (3-5-1) to the early lead just 59 seconds into the contest, but the Corsairs (2-6) evened matters on freshman Austin Miller’s (Meridian, Idaho) shorthanded tally and grabbed a 2-1 cushion midway through the opening stanza on sophomore Jimmy Pelton’s (Syracuse, N.Y.) marker.  Wentworth took control of the contest by striking for four goals in an 8:02 stretch of the middle period, with Busch’s tally with 8:13 remaining in the second frame giving the Leopards the lead for good en route to a 5-2 cushion after 40 minutes of action.  Busch and senior Georgy Gorodetsky (Yekaterinburg, Russia) added third period markers to account for the final margin for the Leopards, who collected 23 of their 33 shots on goal over the last two periods of play.

Gorodetsky added a second period tally and three assists to finish with five points in the win for Wentworth, which received three points each from Busch and Chase along with markers off the sticks of junior Brenden Lloyd (Merrick, N.Y.) and freshman Sam Milnes (Middletown, R.I.).  Senior Adam Tracey (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) collected three helpers as well for the Leopards, who received an 18-save effort in net from sophomore Thomas Draper (Binghamton, N.Y.).

Junior Dillon Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.), sophomores Derek Britner (Salem, N.H.) & Josh Vertentes (Rehoboth, Mass.) and freshman Clay Ellerbrock (Tega Cay, S.C.) notched assists in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which recorded 20 shots on goal for the afternoon.  Sophomore Chris Stangarone (White Plains, N.Y.) made 26 stops for the Corsairs in the contest, including 11 in the middle frame.

UMass Dartmouth will take on host Southern New Hampshire in the PAL Stovepipe Cup third place game on Sunday afternoon at The Ice Den that faces off at 4:50 pm, as the Penmen (6-3) dropped a 4-1 decision to Morrisville (5-3) in the other first round matchup.  Wentworth squares off with the Mustangs in the title game at 1:50 pm.
