NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Sophomore Connor Rowan (Nesconset, N.Y.) netted a hat trick to lead Coast Guard to a 17-5 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over UMass Dartmouth Wednesday evening at Cadet Memorial Field.
The host Bears (8-2) extended their winning streak to six straight by overcoming an early 2-1 deficit with 13 unanswered goals in just over 35 minutes of action, as Coast Guard used five second quarter scores to take an 8-2 lead at the break before netting six straight after intermission to complete the run. Junior Riley McNulty (Annapolis, Md.) led a balanced attack with two goals and three assists for the winners, who received a pair of tallies and helper from senior Benner Geurtsen (Rodman, N.Y.) as well as two markers each off the sticks of senior Cole Hudson (Sparks, Md.) and junior Logan Morin (Norwich, Conn.). Senior Trey Johnson (Millersville, Md.), the first of four Bear netminders, picked up the win in goal with four first half stops, as Coast Guard held a 43-24 advantage in total shots (28-14 on goal) and an 18-7 edge at the face-off circle on the evening.
Junior Mike Rizzo (Bridgewater, Mass.) collected a pair of goals and an assist for three points in the setback for the visiting Corsairs (4-5), who received a marker and two helpers from junior Donovan Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) along with a goal and an assist off the stick of freshman Kevin Swenson (Ipswich, Mass.). Sophomore Josh Souza (Sandwich, Mass.) also scored in the contest for UMass Dartmouth, which received 11 saves in goal from junior Ted McCaffery (Pepperell, Mass.).
UMass Dartmouth hosts UMass Boston in a Little East Conference outing on Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field beginning at Noon, while Coast Guard travels to Norton, Mass. on Saturday afternoon for a New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference clash with Wheaton that begins at 1:00 pm.
