Men's Soccer Falls To Connecticut College, 2-1

NEW LONDON, CT-Billy Hawkey scored the game-winning goal in the 61st minute as host Connecticut College edged the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team, 2-1,  in a non-conference match at Tempel Green Wednesday.

Hawkey scored the game-winning goal from six yards after a restart after the Corsairs were called for a foul.

Sophomore midfielder Ryland Foster-Gorbach (West Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) had tied the game for the Corsairs, taking a pass from junior forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS) and scoring from close range to even the score.

Hawkey had put CC on top early when he scored from 10 yards out in the third minute.

"We got off to a slow start, we gave up an early goal, and we were a bit unsettled for the rest of the first half," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "We got the equalizer in the second half and we played better. It was a back and forth match, and we got a lot of younger players into the game. They're a very good, disciplined team and they came out very well against us. We got it together and came back in the second half, but we just came up a little bit short.".

The Camels outshot the Corsairs, 17-4. Junior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) made five saves for UMD, while Max Nichols made one for CC.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 6-2-0 with the defeat, while the Camels improved to 2-2-2 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Rhode Island College Saturday.
