DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior midfielder Junior Monteiro (New Bedford, Mass.) netted a hat trick in the final 20-plus minutes of play to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 3-1 Little East Conference men’s soccer victory over Plymouth State Saturday evening at Cressy Field.
The host Corsairs (5-3, 1-1 LEC) trailed after senior Joni Hongisto’s (Kaarina, Finland) goal 10:41 into the match staked the visiting Panthers (1-4-1, 0-1 LEC) to the early advantage, and that margin held up until the 70th minute when Monteiro converted a penalty kick after a foul in front of the Plymouth State net. Monteiro struck again in the 81st minute with the game-winner, as he converted a breakaway on a pass from junior Yorik Sajbin (Fall River, Mass.) that gave UMass Dartmouth the lead for good, and he finished his hat trick with his eighth tally of the season on a header of sophomore Rony Morales’s (Seekonk, Mass.) corner kick with 6:22 remaining in the contest.
Sophomore Jake Castro (Swansea, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with a nine-save effort on the night for the Corsairs, while junior Linus Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) made seven stops in the setback for the Panthers. UMass Dartmouth outshot Plymouth State by a 17-12 margin overall while holding an 8-4 edge in corner kicks, as each team had 10 shots on goal for the match.
UMass Dartmouth heads into Boston on Tuesday evening for a Little East Conference clash with UMass Boston beginning at 7:30 pm, while Plymouth State hosts Southern Maine in a Little East match on Wednesday afternoon in Plymouth, N.H. that begins at 3:30 pm.
