Men's Soccer heads North for LEC Playoffs

Nov. 1, 2010

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team will try to replicate the success they had last year when they visit Keene State for a Little East Conference semi-final playoff match Wednesday evening. The match will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Owl Sports Complex.

Last season, UMass Dartmouth won at Keene State, 1-0, during the regular season, and then defeated the Owls, 2-1 in overtime in the LEC semi-finals. This year, the Corsairs and KSC tied, 1-1 in their only meeting of the season October 9th.

This year, UMD went 10-5-2, 3-3-1 in LEC play, earning the fourth and final seed in the tournament by virtue of their victory against Western Connecticut on the final day of the regular season. Keene State was 12-4-2 and 6-0-1, with the tie against the Corsairs the only blemish on their record.

"We have a lot of respect for Keene and what they've accomplished the last two years," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "With that being said, we've had a good track record against them. The way the season has panned out, anyone can beat anyone on any given day, and we're going up there with confidence."

The Corsairs set a few goals this season, and they connected on them. "Our two goals were to reach double digits in wins, and to make the post-season," said Almeida. "Our ticket is punched for the playoffs, it's a new season, everyone is 0-0, and we'll just hope for the best."

It will take a strong effort for UMD to advance. "We will need solid goalkeeping and defense, foremost, and we need to take advantage of any opportunities towards their goal," said Almeida. "If we get a chance to score, we need to make every opportunity count."

Second seeded Eastern Connecticut will host third seed Rhode Island College in the other semi-final match. The winners will meet in the championship match Saturday.
