BRISTOL, R.I. -- Both UMass Dartmouth swimming & diving teams opened their respective 2019-20 seasons with strong performances at the Roger Williams Invitational Saturday afternoon, as the Corsair women finished as the runner-up in the competition while the Corsair men placed third overall.
Sophomore Maddie Kovach (Oxford, Conn.) picked up where she left off last season on the women’s side for UMass Dartmouth, as she placed third in both the 200 individual medley (2:25.10) and 100 yard backstroke (1:06.01) while posting an eighth place finish in the 100 yard freestyle (59.58). Freshman Morgan Beebe (Ellington, Conn.) was third in the 100 yard butterfly (1:06.35) for the Corsairs, who received a fourth place performance in the 500 yard freestyle (5:46.72) and an eighth place finish in the 200 yard freestyle (2:10.53) from freshman Danielle Klash (Gardner, Mass.).
Senior Sarah Murphy (Braintree, Mass.) posted respective fifth and sixth place finishes in the 200 yard individual medley (2:26.26) and 500 yard freestyle (5:52.70) for UMass Dartmouth, which received a third place performance in the 200 yard medley relay (2:03.73) from the quartet of Kovach, Murphy, Beebe and senior Kayla Lovy (Londonderry, N.H.). The Corsairs posted a score of 236.5 points on the day to finish behind only the host Hawks in the final standings.
Junior Cameron DiBenedetto (East Freetown, Mass.) led the way on the men’s side with a fourth place finish in the 100 yard backstroke (1:01.71) for UMass Dartmouth, which received a seventh place performance in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:06.23) from junior Justin Chung (Roslindale, Mass.) along with respective eighth place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle (1:57.41) and 100 yard backstroke (1:03.52) from senior Stephen Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) and freshman Devon Foster (Northbridge, Mass.).
The Corsairs posted a trio of third place relay finishes on the day, as the 200 yard medley relay tandem of DiBenedetto, Chung, junior Noah Yeskewicz (Middleboro, Mass.) and freshman James Shaw (North Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded a time of 1:48.60, while the quartet of Chung, Foster, DiBendetto and sophomore Nathan Motisi (Ellington, Conn.) notched a time of 1:37.12 in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Barrett, Motisi, Shaw and senior Kyle MacKenzie (Londonderry, N.H.) added a third place time of 3:35.36 in the 400 yard freestyle relay for UMass Dartmouth, which finished behind host Roger Williams and runner-up Clark in the team competition.
Both UMass Dartmouth squads open their respective home slates on Friday afternoon by hosting Babson in dual-meet action at the Tripp Natatorium beginning at 4:00 pm.
