Tennis Earns First Victory Of Season Over Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's tennis team obtained their first win of the 2017-18 season on Tuesday, battling in a closely contested match with Salve Regina and triumphing to a 5-4 victory on the road.

How It Happened

UMass Dartmouth started strong in the meeting with the Seahawks, securing two victories and the early momentum during doubles as the pairings of Patrick Pacheco (Fall River, Mass.)/Eli Brooks (Franklin, Mass.) and Tristin Viale (Westfield, Mass.)/Anthony Joseph (Acushnet, Mass.) downed their opponents in 9-8, 8-4 respective scores.

Salve Regina took the final game of the doubles session, but UMass Dartmouth rebounded in the opening game of singles as Pacheco staved off Will Chasse (Greenville, R.I.) 6-2, 6-4 to provide his team with their third point of the match. After the Seahawks earned their second game victory of the day, the Corsairs strung together the match-winning effort as Joseph and Brooks defeated their opponents to clinch the initial victory of the season.  

Inside the Numbers

  • The victory marks the first of the season for the Corsairs with the last one coming May 4th, 2017 in the LEC semifinal against Rhode Island College.
  • The meeting marked the 20th all-time between the schools with UMass Dartmouth controlling the last six contests.
  • Brooks earned his first collegiate doubles and individual victory while Pacheco and Joseph gathered their first doubles and singles decisions of the season.
  • Viale posted his first collegiate win in doubles as well.
