NEW LONDON, Conn. – All six field competitors scored for the Corsairs as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's track and field team opened its spring season at the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday.
Freshman Jared Louf-Woods (Salem, Mass.) and senior Cody Lusas (Melrose, Mass.) each generated eight points to lead the way for the Corsairs. In his first collegiate meet, Louf-Woods heaved the shot 42 feet, 9.5 inches to capture second place in the shot put, while Lusas placed second in the discus with a distance of 120.7 feet. Also in the discus, senior Venzy Alexis (Waltham, Mass.) earned two points with a seventh place finish.
In the javelin, freshman John Kleczkowski (North Attleboro, Mass.) and junior Kyle Augello (Stoneham, Mass.) scored for UMass Dartmouth. Kleczkowski took fifth with a throw of 152.6 feet, while Auggello secured seventh with a distance of 143.1 feet. Sophomore Greg Betsold (Turner Falls, Mass.) generated an eighth place throw in the hammer event to round out the field scoring for the Corsairs.
In the track events, sophomore Sean Herlihy (Walpole, Mass.) placed third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a finishing time of 10:32.62. Junior Cyrenus Paquin (Middleboro, Mass.) followed in seventh and freshman Benjamin Braz (Peabody, Mass.) in eighth. Junior Mike Vaz (Dartmouth, Mass.) crossed the finish line with a fourth place time of 15.55.67 in the 5,000 meter event.
UMass Dartmouth finished the invitational in 10th place with 29 points. Worcester Poly-Tech ended atop the standings with a team score of 139, while Wesleyan (79) and Coast Guard (66.5) took second and third.
The Corsairs return to action on Saturday, April 4, when they host the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.
