Pires Sets School Mark In 1000 Meters At Boston University Thomas Classic

BOSTON, Mass. --  Sophomore Bruno Pires (New Bedford, Mass.) set a school record in the 1,000 meters to highlight a solid all-around performance for the UMass Dartmouth indoor track & field team on Saturday afternoon at the non-scoring Boston University John Thomas Terrier Classic.

Pires posted a 16th place finishing time of 2:28.30 in a field of 59 runners for the Corsairs, while junior teammate George Papoulis (Haverhill, Mass.) ran the second fastest indoor time in school history in the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.80 that was good for ninth in a field of 140 competitors.

Senior Joao Baptista (Malden, Mass.) placed third in the high jump with a mark of 1.95 meters/6 feet, 4 ¾ inches for UMass Dartmouth, while freshman Kaiden Swainamer (Lakeville, Mass.) tossed the sixth longest indoor mark in the shot put (14.46 meters/47 feet, 5 ¼ inches) in Corsair history to post an 11th place finish in a field of 35 competitors.

Senior Alex MacMillan (Brockton, Mass.) was 42nd in a field of 137 runners in the 200 meters (22.45) for UMass Dartmouth, as he teamed up with Pires, Papoulis and junior Delpiero Beaumont (Dorchester, Mass.) to post a 17th place time in the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:23.25).

UMass Dartmouth returns to action next weekend for a pair of events, as the Corsairs will compete at the Open New England Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, Mass. beginning on Friday afternoon as well as at the Wesleyan Invitational in Middletown, Conn. next Saturday.
