GORHAM, Maine -- Senior All-America Nakira Examond (New Bedford, Mass.) scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead three players in double figures as UMass Dartmouth extended its winning streak to five straight with a 70-60 Little East Conference women’s basketball victory over Southern Maine Wednesday evening at Hill Gymnasium.
The visiting Corsairs (15-3, 8-1 LEC) overcame a two-point first quarter deficit by outscoring the host Huskies (11-6, 7-3 LEC) by a 14-7 margin in the second stanza, as six combined points from Examond and freshman Shaelyn Carreiro (Fall River, Mass.) late in that frame helped stake UMass Dartmouth to a 30-25 edge at the break. A conventional three-point play by sophomore Meagan Donovan (Abington, Mass.) stretched the Corsairs’ advantage to nine (36-29) 3:11 after intermission, and that margin grew to double digits two minutes later before Southern Maine crept back to within four on senior Alexa Srolovitz’s (Montreal, Que.) lay-in with 97 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
After trailing by six (48-42) heading into the final 10 minutes of play, the Huskies whittled their deficit to three (50-47) on a jumper by freshman Victoria Harris (Altus, Okla.) with 6:30 to play, but Examond ignited an 11-2 UMass Dartmouth run with eight points to extend the lead to 12 (61-49) with 4:09 remaining. Southern Maine got back to within six in the closing minutes of action, but four points by junior Ashley Brown (New Bedford, Mass.), coupled with free throws from Donovan and senior Danyel Gonzalez (Pawtucket, R.I.), helped iced the visitors’ triumph.
Examond, who eclipsed the 1,500 career point barrier with her scoring effort, was joined in double figures by senior Jess Korzec (West Brookfield, Mass. - 11 points, seven rebounds) and Carreiro (10 points). Brown chipped in with a near double-double effort of nine points and eight rebounds for the Corsairs, who received eight points from junior Kayla McMahon (Hanover, Mass.) as well as seven points from Donovan. UMass Dartmouth shot 52 percent (28-54) from the field overall and held a 37-29 rebounding advantage to complete a regular season series sweep of the Huskies.
Srolovitz finished with 14 points and seven rebounds in the setback for Southern Maine, which received 10 points and four boards from senior Kimberly Howrigan (Fairfield, Vt.) along with nine points and four caroms from sophomore Kristen Curley (Gorham, Maine). Junior Chantel Eells (Turner, Maine) collected eight points for the hosts, who also received seven points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists from junior Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.). The Huskies shot 36 percent (20-56) from the floor and hurt themselves with 25 turnovers on the evening.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Keene State in a Little East Conference outing on Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center that tips-off at 1:00 pm, while Southern Maine travels to Providence, R.I. for a Little East encounter with Rhode Island College that also tips-off at 1:00 pm.
